20 Fenchurch St ‘Walkie Talkie’
Whilst working on the Kingsgate and Zig Zag new building project in Westminster, where we installed 250 tonnes of EMF screening to mitigate stray field levels generated from UKPN underground switching devices.
We were invited by an electrical consultant to visit another major London project at 20 Fenchurch St which was being constructed by Canary Wharf Contractors PLC, affectionately known as the, ‘Walkie Talkie’.
The potential problem was that several HV and LV cables ran across a data processing room

Project Overview
The HV/LV cables were already in situ and sensitive equipment was programmed for installation within a short time frame.
Ladder racks and cable trays had been installed at various heights linking the distribution network throughout the area.
We designed, manufactured and installed a bespoke cable shielding system to accommodate the existing M&E environment. Suspended from a high soffit on drop rods the screened trunking system encapsulated the entire ladder lack and their contents.
When the system was eventually powered up, we conducted operational site measurements and issued the client with certification.
Bespoke solution
This heavy duty trunking was designed to follow the complex path of the HV/LV cables, including a variety of large radii, stepping up and down with several reductions in trunking height to pass under existing services to achieve the required outcome.
After completion of our installation and with power now on, we proved our design by measuring the field strength below the trunking route with a magnetometer.
To ensure full compliance, this operation was witnessed by a member of the electrical engineering consultancy team.
Since installing this steel screened trunking, product development has moved on, we are now able to offer an alternative unique product, lightweight, high performance screened HV/LV cable and bus bar trunking manufactured from a high permeability alloy for which we are the sole UK supplier.
The massive weight saving with this product has made it very popular for high rise applications and pre stressed slabs when weight on or suspended from slabs is a factor.
